Japan has been hit by severe weather as Typhoon Dujuan brought torrential rain, flooding and landslides to parts of the country’s Pacific coast, particularly areas around Tokyo.

The storm has caused multiple deaths, injuries and disappearances, while tens of thousands of households have been left without electricity. According to reports available on September 22, 2026, at least four people had died, 22 were injured and six remained missing. Some subsequent reports have put the death toll at five, highlighting how quickly the situation has been developing.

Among the hardest-hit areas were Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, located around the Tokyo metropolitan area. Intense rainfall triggered landslides, with mud and debris entering homes and damaging roads and residential areas.

In Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, a woman in her 60s was reportedly killed after a landslide sent earth and debris into a house. Emergency crews have continued searching for missing people while working to clear damaged roads and remove debris.

The storm also produced extraordinary amounts of rainfall. On Izu Oshima Island, approximately 832 millimeters of rain fell over 48 hours, more than twice the island’s average rainfall for the entire month of September. In Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward, around 282.5 millimeters of rain fell within 24 hours, reportedly setting a new local record.

The heavy rain also disrupted electricity supplies. Around 45,000 households were reported to have lost power, while hundreds of homes were damaged. Transportation was also affected, with flights cancelled and other services disrupted as authorities responded to the severe weather.

Japanese authorities issued evacuation instructions and advisories to residents in areas considered vulnerable to flooding and landslides. More than 1.5 million people in Tokyo and surrounding areas were reportedly advised or instructed to evacuate or move to safer locations.

Although Typhoon Dujuan has moved away from Japan and some warnings have been reduced, authorities continue to warn residents about lingering risks. Saturated ground can remain unstable even after rainfall begins to weaken, meaning landslides can occur hours or even days after the heaviest rain.

The disaster has once again highlighted the vulnerability of densely populated areas around Tokyo to extreme rainfall. Even when a tropical storm moves away, flooding, unstable slopes, power failures and transportation disruptions can continue to affect communities.

Emergency teams are now focused on searching for missing people, restoring electricity, clearing roads and assisting residents whose homes have been damaged.

For the people affected by Typhoon Dujuan, however, the danger did not end when the storm moved away. The continuing threat from flooded areas and unstable ground remains a major concern as recovery operations continue.
