How Did the Dutch Become the World’s Tallest People? A Lesson for Pakistan

Share

In the mid-19th century, the Dutch were among the shortest people in Europe. Today, they are among the tallest in the world, with young men averaging 1.83 to 1.84 meters (about 6 feet) in height. Over the past 150 years, their average height has increased by nearly 20 centimeters.

According to researchers, this remarkable change was not driven by genetics alone. The biggest factors were better nutrition, improved healthcare, cleaner living conditions, and better child care. A 2023 study found that natural selection contributed only a tiny fraction to this increase, while improved living standards made the real difference.

This is an important lesson for countries like Pakistan, where around 38–40% of children under the age of five suffer from stunting, meaning they do not reach their full growth potential due to poor nutrition and health.

Experts emphasize that height is built during childhood, not adulthood. Once the growth plates close—usually between the ages of 18 and 20—no medicine, supplement, or powder can increase a person’s height.

To support healthy growth, children need:

  • Good maternal nutrition and regular prenatal care during pregnancy.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by protein-rich complementary foods such as eggs, yogurt, lentils, vegetables, and fruits.
  • Adequate daily protein, milk or suitable dairy alternatives.
  • Clean drinking water, complete vaccination, proper hygiene, and timely treatment of illnesses.
  • Sufficient sleep, regular outdoor play, sunlight exposure, and physical activity.

Health experts also warn that many height-increasing powders, capsules, and drops promoted on social media have no scientific evidence to support their claims, and some may even be harmful.

The Dutch experience shows that a nation’s height reflects decades of investment in children’s nutrition, healthcare, and overall well-being—not miracle products or genetics alone.

If your child’s height appears below average for their age, consult a qualified pediatrician and have their growth monitored using a standard growth chart. Early intervention can make a significant difference.
