BEIJING: China has drawn global attention after showcasing an armed robotic dog during its latest military exercises, highlighting the country’s growing focus on advanced battlefield technology and autonomous combat systems.
The four-legged robot was demonstrated during the joint “Golden Dragon” military drills between China and Cambodia. Equipped with an automatic rifle mounted on its back, the robotic dog is designed to operate ahead of troops in urban combat, carrying out surveillance, identifying enemy positions, gathering intelligence, and, if required, engaging targets.
According to Chinese state media, the robot is capable of conducting reconnaissance in high-risk areas, reducing the danger to human soldiers. It can enter buildings, narrow streets, and other hazardous environments to provide real-time information to military units.
Reports also suggest that the robotic dog can work alongside drones and other unmanned systems, making future military operations more coordinated, efficient, and technology-driven.
Defense analysts say that while armed robotic systems represent a major leap in military innovation, questions remain about their real-world reliability, operational effectiveness, and the ethical and legal implications of deploying autonomous weapons on the battlefield.
