Indian authorities have carried out an anti-encroachment operation outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, removing structures and installations that officials said were located beyond the mission’s designated premises.

The action reportedly took place on August 20, 2026, using heavy machinery. Indian authorities described the structures as unauthorized, while the timing of the operation has attracted particular attention because diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and India remain high.

The development is being viewed as a possible reciprocal move following an earlier action in Islamabad, where authorities reportedly removed certain barriers and parking bollards outside the Indian High Commission.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs subsequently described the New Delhi operation as a “proportionate response,” adding a diplomatic dimension to what would otherwise appear to be a routine municipal or administrative action.

The Pakistan High Commission is located in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri diplomatic district. Relations between Pakistan and India have remained strained over a range of political, security and regional issues.

Although the latest operation has been officially presented as an anti-encroachment measure, its timing and connection to the earlier Islamabad action have raised questions about whether administrative measures around diplomatic missions are increasingly becoming part of the broader diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The key question now is whether Islamabad and New Delhi can prevent such disputes from further escalating and resolve issues involving their diplomatic missions through established diplomatic channels.
