The removal of International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has raised serious questions at the international level. According to a report, on July 25, 82 of the ICC’s 125 member states voted in favor of removing Khan from his position over allegations of sexual misconduct. Khan has denied the allegations.

The controversy intensified after Khan sought arrest warrants in November 2024 against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. This was followed by reports of strong opposition and diplomatic pressure from the United States against the ICC.

The report raises an important question: were the allegations against Khan the result of a fully independent and impartial process, or could political factors have also played a role in the proceedings, particularly given his actions against Israeli leadership? According to the report, the woman who made the allegations did not provide a precise time or specific hotel for the alleged incident, which was reportedly said to have occurred at an unidentified hotel in Colombia sometime during 2023 or 2024. Khan’s supporters argue that such issues, among others, warrant further transparent investigation.

There is also a broader perception that extraordinary pressure on Khan increased after the ICC’s actions against Israeli leaders. However, claims that the allegations were directly fabricated by any particular religious or ethnic group cannot be presented as established fact without evidence. The central issue is whether the proceedings against Khan were conducted transparently, independently, and according to proper legal standards.

The fact that a Pakistani-origin figure rose to lead one of the world’s most important international judicial institutions was undoubtedly significant for Pakistan. For that reason, transparency, independent investigation, and due process in the Khan case are important not only for him personally but also for the credibility of the international justice system.

The question remains: Was Karim Khan removed solely because of the allegations against him, or did geopolitical interests and pressure from powerful states also influence the decision? The answer remains contested and demands greater transparency.
