American engineering prodigy Nathan Thomas has made history by breaking a 306-year-old Guinness World Record, becoming the world’s youngest male professor. His extraordinary achievement has drawn comparisons with Sheldon Cooper, the brilliant fictional character from the popular TV series The Big Bang Theory.
Nathan earned the title after being appointed as an Engineering Professor at Miami Dade College at the age of 18 years and 346 days, surpassing the previous record held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in 1717.
Nathan’s academic journey began at an exceptionally young age. At just 10 years old, he enrolled in two college-level courses at Miami Dade College, and by 14, he had gained admission to Florida International University.
Before turning 18, Nathan had already completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering with top honors from Florida International University.
In August 2023, he returned to Miami Dade College as a professor, where he began teaching computing and programming—often to students close to his own age or even older.
When asked whether teaching students of a similar age was challenging, Nathan replied, “Age doesn’t matter in the classroom. Everyone is there to learn. While teaching others, I continue learning myself every day.”
Now 21 years old, Nathan continues to teach both in-person and online while pursuing a law degree at the University of Miami. His remarkable journey is being celebrated worldwide as an inspiring example of talent, dedication, and a lifelong passion for learning.
